How to Choose the Best Sewing Table or Cabinet

We carry four of the most trusted names in sewing furniture — Arrow, Kangaroo, Horn of America, and Create Room — and we're asked every day which one is right for a particular customer. The honest answer is: it depends on how you sew, how much space you have, and what you want most from your sewing setup.

We've been selling these cabinets since 2012. This guide gives you a clear, honest comparison so you can make the right decision with confidence. And if you're still not sure after reading — call us at (866) 556-7018. We help customers choose every day.

The Four Brands at a Glance

Arrow Sewing Furniture — Best Value, Widest Selection

Arrow has been making sewing furniture since 1943 and remains the most accessible premium brand on the market. If you're buying your first real sewing cabinet, Arrow is almost certainly where you should start. Cabinets range from compact fold-away options like the Gidget to full-featured workstations like the Eleanor and Harriet. Most models include a 3-position hydraulic lift and fold-out quilt leaves. Assembly takes 1–2 hours and the customer support is excellent.

Price range: $199–$2,699  |  Warranty: 3 years  |  Best for: Beginners to intermediate sewists, quilters on a budget

Kangaroo Cabinets — Best for Heavy Machines and Serious Quilters

Kangaroo is made by the same company as Arrow but built heavier and with more clever storage. The 5-year warranty (vs. Arrow's 3) tells you something about the construction quality. The Kangaroo + Joey package is our single best-selling product — the Joey storage unit adds three full drawers that slide under the Kangaroo's work surface or roll anywhere in your sewing room. If you have a heavy embroidery machine or you quilt regularly, Kangaroo handles it better than standard Arrow.

Price range: $799–$2,999  |  Warranty: 5 years  |  Best for: Quilters, heavy machines, sewists who want more storage

Horn of America — Premium, USA-Assembled, Built to Last

Horn is in a different category. These cabinets are assembled in the USA using premium materials, and the price reflects that. Horn's standout features include electric lift options (no manual pumping), height-adjustable sit/stand models for sewists with back or joint concerns, and work surfaces large enough for serious quilting and embroidery setups. The Model 9090 with its 34" cut-out is a favorite among embroidery professionals. If you sew every day and want furniture that will outlast you — Horn is the answer.

Price range: $1,076–$4,499  |  Warranty: 5 years  |  Best for: Daily sewists, embroidery machines, those who want the best

Create Room / DreamBox — The Complete Craft Organization System

The DreamBox is in a category of its own. It's not primarily a sewing cabinet — it's a complete craft storage and workspace system. When you open a DreamBox, you get 76 clear acrylic totes in three sizes, organized across a wall of shelves and swing doors. Everything you own is visible and within arm's reach. The DreamStation add-on brings an electric machine lift and extended sewing surface. If you've seen it on social media and wondered if the reaction is warranted — it is. It genuinely transforms a sewing room.

Which Cabinet Is Right for You?

If you're just getting started: Start with Arrow. The Gidget II is a great entry-level option, and the Harriet is a step up if you want more workspace. You won't outgrow a good Arrow cabinet quickly.

If you're a serious quilter: The Kangaroo + Joey package is our #1 recommendation. Large work surface, reliable hydraulic lift, and the Joey gives you dedicated storage right where you need it. The Arrow Christa (designed with quilter Christa Watson) and Horn Model 9090 and 7600 are also excellent quilting choices.

If you have a heavy embroidery machine: Look at Horn of America — specifically the Model 9090 with its 34" cut-out, or the Model 9100 sit/stand for ergonomic sewing. Kangaroo also handles heavier machines well.

If you sew AND craft AND want everything organized: The DreamBox is made for you. Add the DreamStation for a proper sewing setup and you have one of the most complete craft rooms possible in a single footprint.

If you're in a small space: The Arrow Gidget II closes up neatly and has a small footprint. The Kangaroo II is another compact option with a proper hydraulic lift. The DreamBox Center is Create Room's answer to smaller spaces.

If you want the absolute best: Horn of America with an electric lift. Built in the USA, designed to last decades, with features that make daily sewing genuinely easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my sewing machine fit?

Not all machines fit all cabinets. The key measurements are your machine's width, height (with presser foot down), and depth. Most Arrow and Kangaroo models accommodate machines up to 55 lbs within standard dimensions. Horn's 9090 has a large 34" cut-out for bigger embroidery machines. If you're not sure, call us at (866) 556-7018 — we'll check compatibility before you order.

Do the cabinets come assembled?

All cabinets ship Ready-to-Assemble (RTA). Arrow and Kangaroo models take 1–2 hours with basic tools. Horn models may take 2–3 hours. The DreamBox takes 3–4 hours but comes with detailed instructions and a toll-free help line. Most customers manage it solo, though having a helper for the heavier panels makes it easier.

What is a custom machine insert?

A custom insert is a clear acrylic piece cut precisely to fit around your machine in the flatbed position, creating a totally flush sewing surface. It's not required, but most of our customers strongly prefer sewing with one — fabric flows better, small items don't fall through the gap, and the surface feels completely professional. We can order custom inserts for Arrow and Kangaroo models. Just tell us your machine's make and model at checkout.

Is the DreamBox right for me if I mainly sew?

It can be, but it depends. The DreamBox alone is primarily a storage system — you'd add the DreamStation for a proper machine lift and sewing surface. If you're purely a sewist, Arrow, Kangaroo, or Horn will serve you better at lower cost. If you sew AND quilt AND craft AND want beautiful organization, the DreamBox + DreamStation combination is exceptional.

Do you charge sales tax?

We only collect sales tax for orders shipped to Massachusetts. All other states — no sales tax. Combined with our free shipping policy, this typically saves customers $150–$400 compared to buying locally or from big-box retailers.

What brands are you authorized to sell?

We are an authorized dealer for Arrow, Kangaroo, Horn of America, and Create Room. This matters — buying from an authorized dealer means your warranty is valid, you receive full manufacturer support, and you're guaranteed genuine products. We've been an authorized Arrow and Kangaroo dealer since 2012, and added Horn of America and Create Room in 2024–2025.

What if my cabinet arrives damaged?

Inspect all boxes carefully before signing for delivery and note any visible damage on the delivery paperwork. Then contact us right away — we'll coordinate with the manufacturer to get replacement parts shipped to you. Arrow, Kangaroo, and Horn all have excellent replacement part programs. We've handled hundreds of damage claims and we'll be with you every step of the way.
